Regina Paul has penned an absolutely intriguing novel, giving us a far reaching tale of betrayal, love and the pitfalls of prejudice. Getting Out Alive also gives us a logical explanation for some of the tabloid tales we read while waiting on line at the grocery store.

Angel Whitedove has been a victim for much of her life. She has been kidnaped and tortured both physically and psychologically by little gray aliens. Her torture culminated in her whole family being kidnaped and only Angel coming out alive, only to be accused of her parents’ murder. To keep her sanity, Angle has established a network where she can help others who have been kidnaped and tortured. She had and still is going through the same things and so can sympathize them.

Appearing on the scene is a star ship commander from the planet Laren. Darek is there is find and return Angel’s father. He has broken some of Laren’s laws and he is to return him to stand trial. One law is noninterference and the other now involves Angel herself. Laren law does not allow for half breeds and Angel will need to be executed. Darek decides to try and use her to find her father. That plan falls apart when Darek and Angel fall in love. But a member of Darek’s ship wants Darek for herself and sets into motion actions that have far reaching consequences, not only for Darek and Angel but also for Laren it self, forcing the people of Laren to re-examine thier laws and what they thought were truths.

A cross between Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, Getting Out Alive will put you through the whole gamut of emotions. Humor is present as Darek tries to figure out the meaning of Angel’s idiomatic speech. Love and passion are there. Also sadness and dismay are experienced as Angel’s life is placed in danger. The conversations between Darek and Angel were a joy to read as he tries to puzzle out her meanings. Regina Paul did a beautiful job of making both Angel and Darek believable characters. In fact the characters are so well developed you will feel as if they are your friends. You won’t be able to stop yourself from cheering them on in their fight to get out alive. Excellent job for Regina Paul. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future. I highly
recommend Getting Out Alive.
